Lady Stags win district tourney opener

The Deer Park girls basketball team found its outside shooting in the second half and rolled over Riverside 43-20 in the first round of the District VII tournament last night.
The home-standing Lady Stags, leading 20-9 at halftime, broke open the game after Anna Patterson and Taylor Lyons hit long-range jumpers in the opening minutes of the third quarter.
Havelah Fairbanks added another three-pointer in the fourth quarter as the Lady Stags (16-5) will now face Freeman 6 p.m. on Friday in the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
Patterson and Payge Rose led the Lady Stags with 10 points apiece. Rose also added 10 rebounds and three blocked shots in the victory.
Ava West, who hit a pair of three-pointers on her own, led the Lady Rams (6-16) with 11 points.
