A 52-year-old Spokane Valley man was killed and his wife injured in a two-car accident on U.S. Highway 395 at Milepost 178 just south of Deer Park on Friday.
According to the Washington State Patrol, James “Rusty” Brown, well-known in the area’s country and western music scene, was northbound in a 2004 Kia Spectra on U.S. 395 at around 6:30 p.m. when it was struck by a southbound vehicle that has lost control on the roadway’s icy conditions.
Brown was taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. His wife, Annetta Chism, was also taken the hospital. The extent of her injuries is not known.
The driver of the other car, Carrice Wheeler, 24, was also taken by ambulance to the hospital. Her passenger in the 2000 Chevy Cavalier, Mariena Wright, 25, was uninjured.
Ice road conditions, caused by a fast moving snowstorm, believed to have played a role in the accident.
The accident forced the closure of the highway for a couple of hours.
