High school students from Deer Park, Riverside, and Newport will compete for the newly coveted title of “First-Ever-Winner” of the Northern Slam poetry event to be held at the Deer Park High School auditorium, S800 Weber Road, on March 15 at 7 p.m.
The public is invited to attend the free event sponsored by the Friends of the Deer Park Library. Audience participation in the form of support for poets and boos for judges is encouraged.
The Northern Slam poetry slam came about through Amber Williams, a librarian at the Deer Park Library. At the request of Riverside High School faculty, Williams helped connect Riverside with the other schools and students interested in a poetry competition. Williams presented the concept to the Friends of the Deer Park Library, who offered to sponsor the community event.
Northern Slam has grown to include the three school districts, and five local writers and poets as judges. The event features Mark Anderson, an award-winning performance poet from Spokane as master of ceremonies. Students from Eastern Washington University created the advertising for the event.
Students will compete for cash prizes for first, second and third places. All participants receive a Northern Slam T-shirt.
