Lady Stags earn another state softball tournament berth

The Deer Park softball team, using a combination of power hitting and clutch pitching, earned its fourth straight state tournament appearance over the weekend.
The Lady Stags dispatched Freeman 13-3 on Thursday and Lakeside 4-1 and Northeast A League regular season champion Chewelah 6-2 on Saturday to earn District VII’s automatic state tournament berth.
Deer Park parlayed home runs by outfielder Oliveah Erickson and catcher Courtney Butler in its convincing win over Freeman.
The Lady Stags, aided by a home run by Peyton Erickson, scored three times in the seventh inning to get past Lakeside. Cassandra Shaw held the Eagles to only three hits as Deer Park advanced to the championship game.
It was Jaylee Lane’s turn to shine on the mound as the junior, who also homered held the Cougars scoreless in six of the seven innings she pitched.
Courtney Stockman also hit a round-tripper in the win.
