Lady Stags find winning formula in season opener

The Deer Park volleyball team, which started slowly in its season-opening match against Newport yesterday, finally found its comfort zone and swept the Lady Grizzlies 28-26, 25-15, 25-15.
The Lady Stags opened a 19-13 lead in the first game, only to have the Lady Grizzlies storm back to take a 22-12 lead. The teams traded the lead the rest of the way until sophomore Allison Fiest served the final two points.
Deer Park built an 11-4 lead in the second game behind six straight service points from Moran Erickson. The Lady Stags built a 24-9 margin before the Lady Grizzlies made a small scoring run to make the final score respectable.
Deer Park wasted little time imposing its will in the final game after Newport cut the Lady Stag lead to 15-14. The Lady Stags, behind the serving Hailey Sanders, scored nine straight points to wrap up the match.
Deer Park’s Erickson and Paige Thomson shared game honors with 10 kills apiece, while Cora Pelleberg led Newport with seven kills.
Anavah Fairbanks chipped in with four aces for the Lady Stags, while Peleberg took game honors with five aces.
