Law enforcement plans another seat belt crackdown

In an effort to increase seat belt usage in Eastern Washington, 150 law enforcement agencies throughout the state will participate in this 17th annual Click it or Ticket campaign.
According to a Washington Traffic Safety Commission report, Spokane and Whitman counties lag behind the state with observed seat belt use rates of 93.7 percent and 91.4 percent respectively, Stevens County beats the statewide average slightly with an observed rate of 95.5 percent.
The Washington State Patrol and other law enforcement agencies throughout Eastern Washington will be placing special emphasis on seat belt and proper child restraint use during the campaign, which runs through June 3.
Washington state passed a secondary seat belt law in 1986 when the seat belt use rate was 36 percent. In the following years, the state’s seat belt usage rate rose and by 2002 the rate was 82 percent.
