Riverside's Shaw captures a state championship

Riverside's Ben Shaw is the top 1,600-meter Class 1A runner in the state.

Ben Shaw, who will be running for the University of Idaho this fall, is not finished with his track work at Riverside High School.
The senior captured the state Class 1A 1,600-meter championship on Thursday with a 4-minute, 16.89-second performance at Eastern Washington University.
He is the first Riverside trackster to win a state championship in a distance running event since Michael Greenman captured the 3,200-meter title in 2001.
• Shaw’s younger sister, Lizzy, placed sixth in the girls’ 1,600 meters. The sophomore finished the race in 5:11.09.
Deer Park senior Becky George finished third in 5:07.28.
Bear Creek School’s Olivia Markezich won the race in 5:02.41.
