SCFD4 hosting a Wildland Preparedness Day

Staff Writer

Spokane County Fire District No. 4 will take part in National Wildland Preparedness Day — a day to devote making homes safer from the threat of wildfire — on May 5.
SCFD4 will offer a Wildland Fire Preparedness and Information Expo at Station 43, N40118 Elk-Camden Road in Elk on from 9 a.m.-noon.
Teaming up with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and North 40, district officials will arm residents with the tools to be ready in case a wildland fire impacts their home, including preparing a “go” kit, having a family communication strategy, and a plan for pets and livestock.
A pair of in-depth classes will be given during the event, the first at 10 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. During the classes, participants will learn the basics of “Ready, Set, Go” and knowing two evacuation routes from their home, amongst other things.
A DNR forester will offer information about a cost share program for clearing land. Attendees can also sign up to have a free wildfire home assessment.
Fun kids’ events are also planned. Smokey Bear will be on hand for photos. Kids can go through the campfire safety station and there will be many fire engines to explore.
