Social media used in a negative manner was blamed for the closure of Mary Walker schools on Thursday, according to a school district administrator.
In a prepared statement on Friday, Mary Walker High School Principal Matt Cobb said social media combined with irrational fears created a hysteria in the school district.
According to the school district timeline, a report of a “hit list” surfaced more than a week ago. The allegation was investigated and found to lack any substance. However, the allegation resurface again last week, forcing the closure of the schools.
The social media posts were investigated by the StevensCounty Sheriff’s Office which found no threat existed.
