The Spokane Investigative Regional Response team is investigating the details surrounding a fatal Spokane County Sheriff’s shooting on Friday on the outskirts of Deer Park.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a one-vehicle accident at approximately 4:20 p.m. at the 37000 block of Sherman Road.
Deputies were told the man involved in the accident, later identified as Josh Martin, as appeared agitated and was armed with a gun. Deputies received additional information that Martin had hit mailboxes with his vehicle, appeared intoxicated, and held a gun to his head stating he wanted to kill himself.
The first deputy arrived at the scene within minutes, contacted Martin and attempted to deescalate the extremely tense scene. Moments later, Martin produced a handgun from his waistband area and brought it up toward the deputy’s position. The officer fired his weapon, striking Martin.
The deputy, whose name was not immediately released, requested immediate medical response and began lifesaving medical attention but Martin was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
No one else was injured during this incident. The involved deputy was placed on administrative leave as per Sheriff’s Department policy.
